DIY Natural Insect Repellant
With
the warmer weather, we have picnics, yard work, days at the beach and,
yes, more exposure to winged creatures that bite. We can keep them away
so we can enjoy the weather without harming our bodies or the
environment with chemical-laden repellents. Effective, thrifty and
non-chemical: what’s not to like? Oh, it smells good, too. That’ll do.
Please keep in mind that pregnant and nursing women should consult
their doctors before using essential oils. By the way, this repellent
was tested when we visited SASHA Farm:
it works! This is designed to repel mosquitoes and flies; we’ll be
sharing a spray that deters deeper woods insects like ticks and
chiggers soon.
DIY Natural Insect Repellent
1 4-ounce spray bottle (increase amounts for different bottle sizes)
1/2 cup witch hazel
2 tablespoons Vitamin E, olive, almond, or jojoba oil
30 drops eucalyptus oil* and 15 drops each rosemary, clove, and lemongrass/citronella oils
Combine in your spray bottle, shake well and apply as needed. Store in a cool, dark cabinet when not in use.
*Be aware that eucalyptus oil is not recommended for children three and
younger as it may be irritating to their skin. For those with children
three and younger, consider replacing eucalyptus with peppermint or
lavender oils here, both natural bug repellents that are also safe on
young skin.
