 Salt Dough Ornaments Working with salt dough is a fun and very inexpensive way to make some personalized heirloom ornaments this year. They come together easily with everyday items found in the kitchen, and then they can be shaped, baked and painted. The salt dough recipe works for more than just ornaments, of course, and with a minimal effort, you can have a fun eco-craft to work on with the kids any time they are looking for something to do. Other ideas for salt dough: make pins, pendants, refrigerator magnets, tie onto packages as a gift tag. The sky is the limit. 1 cup all-purpose white flour 1/2 cup salt 1/2 cup water Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, salt and water until a non-sticky dough is formed. If it’s still sticky, add a small amount of flour. If it’s too dry, add a small amount of water.   Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about five minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic, like you’d want for bread. Roll out the dough to 1/2-to-1/4-inch thickness, and cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Using a straw, poke a hole in the shape for a place for ribbon to go.  Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for two hours, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Paint! We used water-based paint. When the paint is dry, thread a ribbon through the hole and tie in a knot. Hang on a tree. © 2014 Vegan Street |
