Spicy Harissa Hummus

Spicy Harissa Hummus

Yes, I am the first to admit that hummus is overdone and pretty boring at this point. At the same time, sometimes it’s nice to have an easy, quick and nutritious lunch. What we need to do with hummus is treat it like you would a marriage that is stuck in the doldrums: spice it up. This recipe is for people who like fiery flavor but feel free to modify to a more spice-averse palate by using a lighter touch with the harissa and cayenne. By the way, if you don’t feel like making a homemade harissa, Trader Joe’s sells a perfectly delicious one I recommend.

Spicy Harissa Hummus

15 oz. cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed, reserving ¼ - 1/3 cup aquafaba
(or just use water)
3 tablespoons tahini
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon harissa
(homemade or store-bought)
1½ teaspoons ground cumin
¼ teaspoon cayenne powder
Salt and pepper to taste

Pulse the chickpeas in your food processor about 20 times, until mealy. Add the tahini, garlic, lemon juice, harissa, cumin and cayenne pepper and process until it clumps together. Add aquafaba until it reaches desired smoothness. Add salt and pepper for seasoning.
