DIY Eyebrow & Eyelash Gel

DIY Eyebrow & Eyelash Gel

Yet another indignity comes with age: bizarre eyebrow hairs. Other than my brief phase of being swept up in the over-plucking trend of the 1990s, I am of the Brooke Shield’s mindset when it comes to eyebrows (mine are not in that realm, sadly) and never really minded untidiness. That said, I had this attitude until recent years when I started spying strangely curled, thicker than usual, truly defiant eyebrow hairs in my mirror staring back at me. I started to feel more raspy-voiced cobbler circa 1873 than someone at peace with sporting some non-wispy brows. Eyebrow gel to the rescue! This formula will softly set your hairs in place and condition them as well. This formula is also safe to use on your eyelashes and well as your eyebrows with jojoba oil, which moisturizes and protects, and, some claim, can thicken hairs, as well as aloe vera, which softens. Look for pure aloe vera gel without fragrances and dyes, which you can find at a natural foods store.

You can make this gel for very little money and simple, natural ingredients. Just out of curiosity, I looked up the ingredients in a vegan brand of eyebrow gel and the following was listed on the ingredient’s panel: Water (Aqua), PVP, Cellulose, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, PVM/MA Decadiene Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Retinyl Palmitate (Va), Ascorbic Acid (Vc), Benzyl Alcohol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), DC Black #2 (CI 77266), Red 40 Lake (CI 16035) Do you really want this on your face? For application, here’s what I did: I thoroughly cleaned out and dried an old mascara tube and filled it with my new blend. If you don’t have an old tube to use, you can apply the eyebrow gel with a cotton swab and to your eyebrows with a mascara wand that can be bought at a beauty supply shop. What worked best for me was to stir together the ingredients in a small cup and use a dropper to fill the old mascara tube.
